Older Australians can select from a variety of aged care options that include home care, community care and residential care - offered by private and not-for-profit providers, and governments.
Residential care options range from privately operated supported residential services (SRSs) to nursing homes. SRSs and independent living units are suitable for people in need of additional security, company and some assistance. Hostels cater for low care needs and nursing homes for high care needs - as assessed by the Aged Care Assessment Service (listed under Aged care services). Ageing-in-place is offered by an increasing number of facilities and refers to low care residents remaining at the same facility as they age.
Hostel and nursing home services include accommodation, personal and nursing care and activities programs. Some residential aged care facilities provide extra services for the additional comfort of residents.
Facilities are accredited by the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency Ltd, the body appointed by the Department of Health and Ageing under the Aged Care Act 1997. More...
