Day therapy services are designed to assist older people to remain independent, live in their own home for as long as possible, maintain optimum physical and mental health, social connectedness and pursue interests and hobbies.
Day care, also referred to as day program, activities program or day therapy, is offered by public, not-for-profit and private providers. Frequently, day therapy is a local government service. Many community-based ethnic organisations provide culture-specific day programs for older people from non-English-speaking backgrounds. Some day care programs are specifically aimed at facilitating a respite for carers.
Day care centres for seniors may offer social programs (games, bus trips, BBQs and concerts) and therapeutic care (physiotherapy and occupational therapy).
