Allied health - Speech pathology


Speech pathologists, previously referred to as speech therapist, treat disorders of communication, such as disorders of speech, voice, language, fluency, articulation, swallowing and pragmatics.

Speech pathologists practising in Queensland are required to be registered with the Speech Pathologists Board. Other states do not require registration.

Speech pathologists in Australia are represented by Speech Pathology Australia , a national body with branches in states and territories. It publishes a Code of Ethics for the profession. Members of the public, clients of speech pathologists can make a complaint to Speech Pathology Australia if they believe there has been a breach of the Code of Ethics.

Speech pathologists work in a variety of settings and often develop a special interests in treating children, the aged and people with special needs, such as autism, amongst others. Speech pathologists are predominantly employed by health services in a multi-disciplinary setting or work in private practice.
