Australian optometrists predominantly work in private practice as owners, partners or employees. They conduct examinations, prescribe spectacles and contact lenses and treat eye disorders.
Optometrists can specialise in vision care of the elderly or children, low vision and blindness, visual ergonomics, and visual and occupational safety, amongst other areas.
The Optometrists Association Australia is the professional association for Australian optometrists. It provides information and other services to the profession and the public. The association has six state divisions and is governed by a National Council.
