The death of a loved one is often the beginning of a new chapter in one's life, a time during which feelings predominate. It is a time when the bereaved is likely to find it difficult to deal with practical matters, including making arrangements for the funeral.

Most funeral directors in Australia are members of the Australian Funeral Directors Association (AFDA) which is the only national funeral service organisation in the country. Members of AFDA adhere to a strict Code of Ethics and Practice designed to meet community needs and expectations of service delivery.

Some funeral directors also offer overseas or interstate repatriation of the deceased and funerals in other languages such as Italian, Greek and Asian funerals. An increasing number of funeral directors now also offer pre-paid funerals and funeral bonds.
