It is based on an underlying principle of harmony and aims to restore health by re-establishing balance between the Yin and Yang properties within the body. It is a holistic system that takes into account symptoms as well as the patient's emotional temperament and bodily constitution. TCM treatments include Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture and Chinese massage (Tui Na).
In Victoria, practitioners using the titles Acupuncturist, Chinese herbal medicine practitioner or Chinese medicine practitioner must be registered with the Chinese Medicine Registration Board.
The Australian Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Association Ltd (AACMA) is the leading national professional association for TCM practitioners. AACMA accredits practitioners and publishes a Code of Conduct for its members. The code is prescriptive and describes the minimum acceptable standard of professional conduct.
