Therapeutic massage involves the applying of pressure, motion, or vibration to the soft tissues of the body to aid healing from injury, manage pain, improve circulation and lymphatic drainage, reduce stress and induce a state of relaxation.
There are many types and styles of therapeutic massage, including Bowen therapy; Anma or traditional Japanese massage; Ayurvedic Abhyanga massage; Reiki massage; Shiatsu; Chinese Tui Na and Zhi Ya massage; Lomilomi, also known as traditional Hawaiian massage; craniosacral therapy; myofascial release; deep tissue massage; myoskeletal alignment technique; Swedish massage; and hot stone massage.
The stress reducing benefits of massage therapy in our fast-moving world is well recognised. Employers for example see increased productivity when they offer massage in the workplace and many health insurance companies include options that cover remedial massage therapy.
There is a growing number of professional massage services offered by a variety of health practitioners, including chiropractors, osteopaths as well as massage therapist who complete studies dedicated to massage.

Growing up in Miyazaki, Japan it was a tradition to give kata-tataki (shoulder massage) and ashi- fumi (foot massage) to our elders. From childhood I learned how to give massage – it was a natural way to take care and show respect. The tradition has stayed with me, and it was a natural progression to complete my formal training in Shiatsu and Oriental Therapies.HIROMI OKADA-ZALEWSKI
