According to the Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA), the dental workforce across Australia in 2004 was represented by 23,000 practitioners (dentists, dental therapists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, dental technicians and dental prosthetists), predominantly working in private practice.
Australia has a shortage of dentists. The unequal distribution of dental service providers across all regions is a major problem. The rural and remote areas of the public health system and Aboriginal Health Services often find it difficult to attract dental health professionals.
The Australian Government has introduced the Public Sector Dental Workforce Scheme (PSDWS) to help address workforce shortages in rural and remote areas of Australia. Dentist graduates from specific dental programs completed in selected countries are eligible to participate under the PSDWS scheme.
