General practitioners in Australia are registered to practice with the relevant State and Territory Medical Boards. The Medical Boards also handle complaints from the public about particular doctors. The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners is responsible for developing and maintaining the standards of general practice in Australia.
Between 2002 and 2006 there was a 5.2% increase in the number of general practitioners in Australia, from 21,815 to 22,954. (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare 2008. Medical labour force 2006. National health labour force series no. 41. Cat. no. HWL 42. Canberra: AIHW.) The increase was in line with the 5.3% growth in the Australian resident population for the same period.
The Australian health system is increasingly relying on overseas trained doctors. They represent around 25% of the total in medical professions. Overseas trained doctors considering working in Australia can obtain information at www.doctorconnect.gov.au .
General practitioners are always welcomed to work in rural areas of Australia. GPs in rural areas appreciate the rewards that include a closer-to-nature lifestyle, challenging clinical work, closer doctor-patient relationships and involvement with the local community.
