Endocrinology is a sub-specialty of internal medicine.
Endocrinologists trained in Australia are Fellows of the The Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP), following specialist training in internal medicine and endocrinology.
Many endocrinologists are also members of the Endocrine Society of Australia (ESA). ESA is a not-for-profit organisation of scientists and clinicians who conduct research and practice in the field of endocrinology.
Endocrinologists often develop a special interest or complete additional training in areas such as diabetes, endocrine emergencies, gestational diabetes, menopausal disorders, thyroid diseases, neuroendocrine conditions, glandular tumours, disorders of growth, lipid and nutritional disorders.
