Medical eye specialists or ophthalmologists in Australia hold a fellowship of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) and use the post-nominals FRANZCO.
Ophthalmologists often develop an interest in sub-specialties focusing on specific diseases or parts of the eye, such as corneal transplants, eye injury, glaucoma, external disease, paediatric ophthalmology, neuro-ophthalmology, ocular oncology, vitreoretinal disease/surgery, ocular genetics, oculoplastic and refractive surgery.
The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists' mission is to maintain and further improve the high standard of eye care in Australia and New Zealand.
Ophthalmologists trained in other countries who want to practice in Australia need to apply for assessment by the Australian Medical Council (AMC). The AMC refers eligible applications to RANZCO for assessment and recommendation.
