Paediatricians are specialist physicians treating infants, children, and adolescents. They can complete additional training and practice in sub-specialties such as neonatology, paediatric cardiology; paediatric oncology; adolescent medicine and paediatric rehabilitation.
Paediatricians in Australia are trained with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP). The RACP website publishes the National Standards for the Care of Children and Adolescents in Health Services - developed by peak bodies with an interest in child welfare.
According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, in 2006 there were 884 specialists with their main specialty of practice in paediatric medicine. (Medical labour force 2006. National health labour force series no. 41)
