Reproductive medicine focuses on the diagnosis and management of reproductive problems experienced by men and women. It is a complex area as it overlaps with other areas of medicine such as molecular biology, endocrinology, gynaecology & obstetrics and urology.
The Australian Medical Council recognises the specialty Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. Specialists are Fellows of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and use the post-nominals FRANZCOG.
Specialists in reproductive medicine usually undergo training in obstetrics and gynaecology followed by training in reproductive endocrinology and infertility, or in urology and andrology.
Many specialists dedicate their practice to in vitro fertilisation (IVF), assisting couples with difficulties conceiving to have children.
The Fertility Society of Australia is an association of professionals working in this field. Its members include scientists, doctors, researchers, nurses, consumers and counsellors in reproductive medicine in Australia & New Zealand.
