Urology is the surgical specialty that focuses on operative and non-operative management of disorders of the urinary tract and the male reproductive system. Urologists often develop an interest in a sub-specialty such as paediatric urology, endourology, oncologic urology, gynecologic urology, andrology, urologic cancer, plastic and reconstructive urology and genitourinary trauma.
Urologists complete post-graduate training delivered by the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand on behalf of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), or equivalent. They use the post-nominals FRACS.
The Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand is the professional organisation for urological surgeons in Australia and New Zealand.
In 2007 there were 282 medical specialists with urology as their main specialty of practice. (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare 2009. Medical labour force 2007. National health labour force series no. 44. Cat. no. HWL 45. Canberra: AIHW)
