There are 290 private hospitals in Australia, representing 32% of all hospital beds in the country. Private hospital operators include not-for-profit entities, single hospital operators, private health insurance funds and large listed public companies.
The Australian Private Hospitals Association is the peak national body representing private hospitals.
Private hospitals are taking on a growing importance in Australia's complex health care environment. They account for almost 40% of all hospital admitted patients, cared for by 46,458 full-time equivalent staff. (2007 Facts & Figures, Australian Private Hospitals Association, www.apha.org.au).
The Australian private hospital industry is growing, fuelled by increased consumer demand for private health care on the back of historically high private health insurance membership (following the introduction of the 30% rebate in 1999); growth in private investment in healthcare in Australia and the globe; and government support of the industry.
