Private hospitals
The private hospital industry in Australia has a variety of operators both in respect to size and business type; not-for-profit entities, single hospital operators, private health insurance funds and large publicly listed companies such as Ramsay Health Care Ltd and Healthscope Ltd.
In the 2004 / 05 financial year, there were 532 private hospitals operating in Australia. (Australian Bureau of Statistics, Private Hospitals Australia 2004-05.) In 2003 / 04, out of 79,907 total hospital beds nation-wide, private hospitals offered close to 25,000 beds and private stand-alone day hospitals 1,715 places. The Australian Private Hospitals Association is the peak national body representing private hospitals and day surgeries.
The rights and responsibilities of private patients in hospital is explained in the Private Patients' Hospital Charter, a government publication issued by the Minister for Health, in accordance with Section 73F of the National Health Act 1953.
