For more than 30 years Arthritis & Osteoporosis WA has worked to become the leading authority on arthritis education, research and service provision state-wide.
Many people believe that arthritis pain is an inevitable part of growing older and that nothing can be done to help. The truth is that much can be done to help those with arthritis. Proper education and management can greatly improve quality and enjoyment of life.
Arthritis is a general name for a variety of diseases which affect the joints of the body.
There are more than 100 different type of arthritis. The most common are Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Gout. Other areas of concern include Ankylosing Spondylitis, Lupus (SLE), Sjorgrens Syndrome, Scleroderma, Fibromyalgia, Ross River Virus and Osteoporosis.
People are affected by arthritis in different ways. They may have symptoms which are mild, moderate or severe. The severe forms need early diagnosis and treatment to prevent serious joint damage.
The most common symptoms of arthritis are persistent pain, fatigue, swelling and stiffness in one or more joints.
Who gets arthritis?
Anyone at any age! You do not need to be old to get arthritis. In fact almost 60% of people with arthritis are of working age (15-64 years).
Arthritis is Australia's major cause of disability and chronic pain. It affects an estimated 3.1 million people or approximately 16.5% of Australians.
Juvenile chronic arthritis affects 4 per 1000 with 3 per 1000 not diagnosed. Juvenile chronic arthritis affects more children than diabetes or cerebral palsy.
