Charmaine Roth, Sydney Essential Health

Psychotherapy or counselling with a psychotherapist, is an intentional interpersonal relationship used by trained psychotherapists to aid a client or patient in problems of living.

It aims to increase the individual's sense of their own well-being. Psychotherapists employ a range of techniques based on experiential relationship building, dialogue, communication and behavior change that are designed to improve the mental health of a client or patient, and to improve group relationships (such as in a family).

We all experience times in our lives when we feel that the stress is too great and we need support. Often family and friends are our first option. This does not always help because they may have their own problems or agendas, be part of your problem, or cannot listen without getting upset or involved. Sometimes our problems can also feel too intimate to share with people that we see regularly in everyday lives.

The counsellor is trained to provide an empathic environment where a trust develops. The relationship is governed by strict boundaries which provide a structure of safety, particularly around confidentiality. The counsellor applies specialist skills to encourage the client to come to know themselves better and make sense of certain behaviours and beliefs.
