Nikita (Nik) Kotlarov

... your mind matters...

Evidence based psychological practice with demonstrated results. Mind Zone Psychology (ME) provides psychotherapy & counselling to improve performance, wellbeing & mental health. Medicare rebates and bulk billing available*.

Sometimes we hear that people are judged by their family or friends, suggesting they "get over it". At ME, we realise that if this were that easy, we would all just do it! Some of the things that impact on us may be very powerful and your psychologist will work with you on identifying your unique needs, as well as tailoring and delivering a well-researched intervention.

So, what is going to happen? Well, your first appointment is going to be very different from the rest and usually involves a one hour face to face meeting in which you will have the opportunity to discuss some of the things that are important to you with your psychologist.

Generally, we will try to understand the hopes you have for the future and what are the things that are holding you back from making effective steps toward your hopes. After the meeting your psychologist is likely to research the current literature to ensure your treatment is consistent with the most recent scientific advances. We will then work with you and your referrer (typically, your doctor) and make recommendations that will outline the service which we believe will best address your concerns.

If you have any further questions please feel free to speak to your psychologist. Here at ME, we invite you to make a shift in perspective - we are here to provide you with service, not the other way around.

Latest:

  • Clients can now attend during extended opening hours - including some afternoons and Saturdays
  • Clients are likely to experience little or NO waiting list (depending on time and day preference)
  • Clients are offered to have their first session bulk billed*, so that the service can be evaluated and in difficult circumstances a fair fee schedule can be negotiated
  • Typically, a percentage of our Clients are fully bulk billed*, depending on their circumstances

It is very important that you are able to connect with your therapist. We all have preconceived ideas about genders, appearances, places of birth, etc. and often, it is hard to make a decision based on a website, a picture, or an article written by the therapist. Nik is a registered Medicare Australia Provider (as well as many other funding bodies) and aims to bulk bill first sessions*, to allow Clients make an informed decision regarding their engagement with the therapy and evaluate the service prior to making any financial commitments. For those who struggle financially, we aim to provide accessible services through a range of discounts available, and in some circumstances, all sessions may be bulk billed*. We also work with variety of insurers - please enquire for details.

*BULK BILLING, Rebates, and other funding - available with appropriate referral (usually from your Doctor) only and is subject to change without notice.

Nik speaking about the Therapeutic /Coaching /Training process:

As a nationally registered health practitioner in Australia, I am trained to assist Clients with a wide variety of concerns. My therapeutic approach is specifically beneficial where Clients are finding it difficult to use their natural coping and/or require assistance due to the overwhelming nature of their concern. In my work as a psychologist / psychotherapist / counsellor, I literally helped thousands of Clients and am comfortable working with a wide range of issues, including Stress, Anxiety, Depression, BiPolar, mood disorders, Trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Anger Management, Gambling or Substance Addictions, Self Esteem and Confidence, Motivation, Sport / Executive/ Creative Performance Enhancement, Social / Relationship Concerns, Life / Career direction, Couple and Marriage concerns, Work-Life Balance and others. My Clients are usually individuals, couples, families, adolescents, adults, athletes, professionals, survivors of trauma, assault, accident, or disaster, struggling with changing life stages, loss of physical function a loved one, and many others.

To quote Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn "you are not your diagnosis, as long as you are breathing, there is more right with you than there is wrong". I see my job as to help you find a way to utilise your strengths most effectively. I believe human beings have an incredible ability to self heal. Sometimes, due to a variety of circumstances, it is difficult to connect with this ability. I assist my Clients reconnect with their native sense of self and allow their life processes to take place. At the same time, I help my Clients choose a valued life direction and decide on practical ways to take effective steps within it.

It is unfortunate that pain and suffering can sometimes take the forefront of our life. Struggling with physical and mental health concerns can overshadow things that matter to us most and make it difficult to contribute effort and attention to our friends, loved ones, our careers, etc. The traditional medical model can also sometimes place further emphasis on the symptoms and "what is wrong with you". As a result, we may fall into the trap of creating a life that is about symptoms. In my work with Mind Zone Psychology (ME), I empower my Clients to create a life about things that matter to them, ideas they want to stand for. From this perspective, symptoms may be just a bump on our journey and NOT the journey itself. Remember - you are not your diagnosis. In doing so, I rely heavily on the research from the following theoretical perspectives: Acceptance Commitment Therapy (or Training, ACT), Positive Psychology (and Flow), Mindfulness Based Interventions, under the umbrella of Contextual Behavioural Science (contextualscience.org)
