Clinical immunology is a branch of internal medicine. Clinical immunologists and allergy specialists treat allergic diseases, auto-immune diseases, immunodeficiencies and conditions in which the immune system is suppressed.
The professional association representing medical specialists in this category is the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA). ASCIA is a non-profit organisation. Its members practice as clinical immunologists, allergy specialists and immunology scientists. One of the objectives of ASCIA is to: "advance and maintain the highest standards of scientific and medical practice among those professionally engaged in the areas of clinical immunology and allergy".
In 2021 there were close to 200 physicians registered as immunology and allergy specialists (Medical Board of Australia, Registrant data, www.ahpra.gov.au/).
