Mr. Paul Smith is a highly qualified Australian neurosurgeon specialising in brain and spine surgery.

Mr Smith undertook medical training at The University of Melbourne and obtained the Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery in 1996. He then passed the First part surgical examination after completing several years as a resident doctor. Following this he completed 7 years of specialist training in Neurosurgery working at numerous neurosurgical centres in Australia including St Vincent's Hospital, The Royal Melbourne hospital, the Austin hospital and the Royal Children's hospital.

After gaining the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in Neurosurgery, Mr Smith commenced work as a consultant Neurosurgeon in 2008 at St Vincent's hospital. In late 2008-2009 he undertook a fellowship in Skull Base Surgery at the Royal Salford Hope Hospital in Manchester, United Kingdom. This fellowship allowed Mr. Smith to work with leaders in the field - Professor Richard Ramsden, Mr Andrew King and Mr. Scott Rutherford - gaining broad experience in the management of difficult skull base lesions including acoustic neuromas (vestibular schwannomas), meningiomas, glomus tumours, epidermoid tumours and cavernomas.

In addition to his surgical training Mr. Smith completed a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD.) at the University of Melbourne between 2002-2005. He examined neurogenesis in an adult mammalian model of epilepsy. This important work has been internationally published and widely cited in scientific literature and continues to be so.

Mr. Smith also has a Graduate Diploma of Biostatistics and Epidemiology (GDEB) which he obtained in 2002 at the University of Melbourne. Mr. Smith is passionate about the need for rigorous and critical analysis of available scientific literature to enable rational and evidence based decisions in clinical medicine. This qualification in biostatistics and epidemiology was undertaken by Mr. Smith to facilitate this approach in his clinical practice.

In 2009 Mr. Smith returned to Melbourne to recommence work as a consultant neurosurgeon at St. Vincent's Public and Private Hospitals. He currently continues to work at these centres.

Mr. Smith practices the range of general neurosurgery but has a particular interest in:

  • acoustic neuroma and meningioma (skull base) surgery
  • spine and cerebrovascular surgery
  • trigeminal neuralgia
  • general brain tumour surgery.

Mr. Smith is also particularly interested in minimally invasive techniques in brain and spine surgery where safe and advantageous. The keyhole concept in neurosurgical procedures is applied routinely, again, where safe and advantageous.
