Rheumatology, a subspecialty of internal medicine, focuses on diagnosing and treating rheumatic and musculoskeletal disorders. Rheumatologists treat arthritis, some autoimmune diseases, musculoskeletal pain disorders and metabolic bone disorders - most commonly osteoporosis.
Rheumatologists are Fellows of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and use the post-nominals FRACP. The Australian Rheumatology Association is the professional body representing rheumatologists in Australia.
In March 2022 there were 455 registered rheumatologists in Australia (Medical Board of Australia, Registrant data, www.ahpra.gov.au/).
