Pre-birth breastfeeding consultation

As Dad is a valuable part of the breastfeeding team, couples are encouraged to attend a pre-birth breastfeeding consultation together.

Essential if you are anticipating breastfeeding challenges due to:

  • Previous issues with sore nipples or low milk supply
  • History of hormonal disorders- PCOS, IVF, difficulty falling pregnant
  • Previous breastfeeding problems or experience of low supply etc
  • Absence of antenatal breast changes
  • Asymmetrical breasts, wide breast spacing or 'odd' shaped breasts
  • Acute or chronic disease- eg diabetes including gestational
  • Breast surgery or trauma
  • Flat or inverted nipples
  • Cleft palate
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Risk of premature birth
  • Family history of allergies/food intolerances
  • Twins or Multiple birth

During your session, you will:

  • Learn how breastfeeding works
  • Discover how to get things off to a flying start
  • Learn what to expect in the early weeks of breastfeeding
  • Discuss common breastfeeding concerns and how to prevent them
  • Receive practical tips on everything from clothing to what to read, buy etc
  • Develop a breastfeeding plan
  • Meet your lactation consultant before baby is born
  • Know when to call a Lactation Consultant

Post-birth lactation consultation

Individual support and accurate information is invaluable during those early, hazy days of breastfeeding and new motherhood.

Whether you are experiencing sore nipples, low milk supply, or attachment problems or maybe some other breastfeeding challenges due to inverted nipples, cleft palate or twins, for example, a lactation consultant will work with you, providing support, assessment and a plan.

  • Over-supply and low-supply
  • Attachment/sucking issues
  • Wakeful or fussy baby
  • Premature or early baby
  • Colic or reflux management

  • Expressing and storing milk
  • Low weight-gain

Fees & Appointments

  • Pre-birth breastfeeding consultation: 90 minutes $80
  • Initial breastfeeding consultation: 90 minutes $80
  • Follow-up consultation: 30 minutes $40

There are no additional charges for visits to Roma hospital or home visits in Roma town

Your lactation consultant may visit you at home or in hospital, or at the Red Gate clinic. She will check how your baby looks and acts and may also check your nipples and breasts. She will watch your baby breastfeeding and help with positioning, showing you how to tell when your baby is feeding well. If there are any problems, your lactation consultant will suggest ways to fix them.
